How opt-out requests work (and why they take time)
The typical steps of a people-search opt-out, common verification checks, and how to confirm a listing is gone.
An opt-out is a request asking a site to stop publishing your information. The process varies, but most follow a similar pattern.
Typical steps
- Find your listing on the site and copy its address (URL).
- Open the official opt-out page — always the one linked from the site's own privacy policy.
- Submit the form, usually with the listing URL and an email address.
- Confirm by email if the site sends a verification link.
- Wait for the site to process it. Published processing times vary from a day to several weeks.
- Re-check the listing. A confirmation message is not the same as the page being gone.
Things to watch for
- Some sites ask for identity verification. Only provide what the site's official process requires.
- Be wary of third-party "removal" pages that are not linked from the site's own privacy policy.
- Listings sometimes reappear when a site refreshes its data. Periodic re-checks catch this.
